WATCH is comparing published staffing expenditure and seeking an explanation for the difference between Tom Rutland and two other new Sussex MPs, while establishing whether current recruitment represents expansion or replacement.
For 2024/25, the figures reviewed by WATCH were approximately £180,160 for Tom Rutland, compared with about £120,107 for John Milne and £110,711 for Peter Lamb. The figures show a difference; they do not by themselves explain why it exists.
WATCH is seeking context on staffing structure, start dates, turnover and current recruitment so that legitimate differences in constituency workload or staffing arrangements are not mistaken for wrongdoing.
This case is at request-response stage. Any response that materially explains the figures will be published or fairly summarised alongside the evidence.
The expenditure comparison is a starting point, not a finding of misconduct. WATCH is explicitly seeking the explanation rather than assuming one.
